Air Duct Cleaning
Is YOUR FAMILY breathing clean indoor air?
Just like all the surfaces in your home, your air ducts gather dust and dirt over time. Dirty air ducts can lower indoor air quality and worsen health problems, especially for those with allergies, asthma, respiratory issues, or autoimmune disorders.
Proper air duct cleaning is an effective way to help you and your family breathe clean, healthy air. It can also boost your home’s energy efficiency and save you money.
Can indoor air quality affect my health?
Poor air quality is a major cause of:
• Heart disease and stroke, which are the first and fourth leading causes of death in the U.S.
• Air pollution, which can impact heart health and trigger heart attacks and strokes, causing disability and death in susceptible individuals.
• One in three American adults has heart or blood vessel disease and faces greater risks from air pollution.
The EPA is raising awareness about the connection between heart disease, air pollution, and other environmental factors as part of Million Hearts, a national initiative to prevent heart attacks and strokes.

Is indoor air quality worse than outdoor air quality?
Indoor air quality is typically 2-5 times worse than outdoor air quality and can become up to 100 times worse during certain activities, according to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). This happens because indoor spaces trap and concentrate pollutants from both outdoor and indoor sources, such as dust, mold, cooking gases, and Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs).
Why indoor air can be worse:
• Trapping pollutants: Walls, windows, and doors that protect us from the outdoors also trap air pollutants inside.
• Indoor sources: Activities like cooking, smoking, and using cleaning products, along with materials like furniture, paints, and glues, release pollutants indoors.
• Concentration over time: Indoor air pollutants can build up in closed spaces, unlike outdoor air, which circulates more freely, leading to higher concentrations.
• Longer exposure: People spend much of their time indoors, increasing their exposure to higher pollutant levels.
Examples of pollutants found indoors
• Dust and mold
• Cooking gases
• Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs): from paints, glues, and furniture
• Fungi spores
• Cigarette smoke
Health and Environmental Effects of Particulate Matter (PM)
Particle size is directly linked to health risks. Small particles less than 10 micrometers can penetrate deep into the lungs and may enter the bloodstream.
Exposure to these particles can affect the lungs and heart.
Numerous studies link particle pollution to:
• Premature death in people with heart or lung disease
• Nonfatal heart attacks
• Irregular heartbeat
• Aggravated asthma
• Decreased lung function
• Increased respiratory symptoms like airway irritation, coughing, or difficulty breathing
People with heart or lung diseases, children, older adults, minority populations, and low socioeconomic status groups are most at risk, either due to higher sensitivity or greater exposure.

Why should I get air ducts cleaning?
Because they get dirty!
Proper and professional air duct cleaning can help people with Allergies, Asthma, COPD, Compromised Immune Systems, Heavy dust loads in homes where people are dusting every day and can’t get ahead of it.

How often should I get my air duct system cleaned?
It is recommended to clean air ducts every 3 to 5 years or as needed.
Besides the usual dust and dirt found in all homes with air ducts, some homeowners should clean their ducts more frequently, such as those with:
• pets living in the home
• occupants with allergies or asthma
• cigarette or cigar smoke
• water contamination or damage to the home or HVAC system
• home renovation or remodeling projects
Some people are more sensitive to these contaminants. Allergy and asthma sufferers, young children, and the elderly tend to be more affected by poor indoor air quality, which air duct cleaning can help improve.
Asthma and Heart Disease
Two key air pollutants that affect asthma are ozone (found in smog) and particle pollution (found in haze, smoke, and dust). Studies show that when these pollutants are present, adults and children with asthma and other lung diseases are more likely to experience symptoms.
Research also shows that air pollution can trigger heart attacks, strokes, and irregular heart rhythms—especially in people already at risk. For those with heart failure, air pollution can further reduce the heart’s ability to pump blood properly. Particle pollution is the main concern for causing these effects.

Why should I use a “NADCA” company?
NADCA members follow a higher standard, sse the right methods and the best equipment.
An HVAC company must meet strict requirements to become a NADCA member.
NADCA members must:
• have at least one NADCA certified Air Systems Cleaning Specialist (ASCS) on staff
• maintain general liability insurance
• agree to clean according to ACR, the NADCA Standard, and comply with NADCA’s Code of Ethics
If a company does not plan to clean according to NADCA standards, this must be disclosed to the buyer at the time of sale.
These requirements ensure a higher level of assurance for consumers.
Finding a Qualified Contractor
• When speaking to a contractor, ask for proof of NADCA membership and certification.
• Confirm the contractor will thoroughly inspect your HVAC system and notify you of any problems.
• Make sure the contractor will clean all components of your HVAC system.
NADCA members use proper cleaning methods. Air duct cleaning is misleading; the entire HVAC system should be cleaned. Cleaning only part of the system can cause recontamination, reducing the cleaning benefits. Just as you wouldn’t clean only half of your living room floor, you should clean all parts of your HVAC system.
NADCA recommends cleaning all HVAC system components, including:
• air ducts
• coils
• drains
• drain pans
• registers
• grills
• air plenum
• blower motor and assembly
• heat exchanger
• air filter
• air cleaner
During cleaning, the entire HVAC system is kept under continuous negative pressure (a vacuum) to prevent contaminants from spreading. This pressure removes very fine airborne particles, ensuring they are not released into your living space when the system restarts. It also extracts loosened contaminants, which are collected and removed from your home.
HVAC cleaning is not complicated, but each job is unique. Access to duct interiors should use existing openings like supply diffusers, return grills, duct end caps, or service openings whenever possible. Skilled technicians may need to cut access holes in the ductwork to reach inside with cleaning tools. Creating and properly sealing these openings requires professional skill and craftsmanship.
Antimicrobial chemicals, including sanitizers, disinfectants, and deodorizers, can be applied to nonporous HVAC surfaces to address microbial contamination and control odors. Only EPA-registered products should be used. These chemicals are applied only after mechanical cleaning and if necessary.
Our members use the right equipment. HVAC cleaning professionals have a range of tools available, including truck-mounted and portable vacuums. These help stop the spread of contaminants and clean the system according to NADCA Standard.

Can cleaning air ducts save money on electricity bills?
According to the U.S. Department of Energy, 25 to 40 percent of the energy used for heating or cooling a home is wasted. Contaminants in the system cause it to work harder and shorten its lifespan. Although filters are used, everyday use still allows dirt to accumulate.
When an HVAC system is clean, it doesn’t have to work as hard to maintain your desired temperature. This results in lower energy use and better cost-effectiveness.

Why should I use a licensed contractor?
Arizona Registrar of Contractors states you must be a correctly licensed company to access the Air Handler system inside an HVAC system.
HVAC manufacturers state that your warranty on your HVAC system is void if an unlicensed contractor was to touch it.
Make sure you are using a Licensed Contractor.

How to avoid scams!
Homeowners should be cautious of “blow-and-go” air duct cleaning companies. These companies often charge a low fee but do a poor job cleaning heating and cooling systems. They may also pressure homeowners into paying for unnecessary services, with or without their permission.
Homeowners are sometimes told they have mold or other toxic substances in their HVAC systems—claims that are usually false and meant to extort money. Coupons and flyers advertising low prices for “whole house air duct cleaning” and “HVAC mold and soot removal” often arrive by mail. If you know of a “blow-and-go” air duct cleaner, report the company to your local Better Business Bureau.

False claims of NADCA membership
Beware of air duct cleaning companies that falsely claim to be NADCA members. Some companies illegally use the NADCA logo or say they are members when they are not. To make sure the company you hire is a genuine NADCA member, check NADCA’s Find a Professional Directory.
